Advent: 3 Reminders

1. Advent is important. Unless you were raised Roman Catholic, you might not have a big grasp of Advent. But the gospels of Matthew and Luke start with what happens just BEFORE Jesus is born. There’s a reason for that: the world prepares for the Coming of the King. And so can we.

2. Advent doesn’t have to be time-consuming or formal. Read advent meditations, they’re everywhere.

  • Read the Nativity accounts in Matthew and Luke. (They complement each other but they’re different!)
  • Pray and ask the Lord where you need the Christ to be born into your life and circumstances.
  • Meditate on the human figures of the Nativity: Joseph, Mary, a shepherd, a Wise Man from the East.
  • Journal what you see and hear.

3. Don’t replace Advent with crazy Christmas prep. Decorate? Sure, I do that over Thanksgiving weekend. Fun stuff, sure: family, friends, baking if that’s your thing. Work? Sure, if it’s the work God has given you do right now. But using over-busyness as the excuse to lose what, and Who, Christmas really is? Resist temptation. The Lord is ready to speak to you in Advent silence, not so much in a noisy mall.
