How to Pray When You’re Anxious and Scattered

How many times has this happened? You feel scattered and distracted. You try to pray but nothing changes. You’ve entered overloaded, anxiety-provoking, crazy-making territory.

It’s not surprising. When you’re anxious, your brain doesn’t know (or care) if you’re in real danger or not. It will still prioritize detecting threats over clear thinking, which leads to brain fog and the inability to concentrate. Everything not related to the immediate problem crashes and burns.

Like focused prayer.

But God is good, and there is a way.

You can stay calm and centered and open to God’s leading even in the middle of the fire.

It works just as surely as breathing because that’s where it comes from: Christian breath prayer.

Breath prayer takes of phrase from the Bible or your prayer request and allows you to deliver it in your actual reading.

I’m writing this post on March 5, 2026. The breath prayer that the Lord gave me this morning and that I’ll teach you how to do, is this:

“Oh Lord, center me in peace.”

I repeat the words silently while breathing slowly.

On the inhale I pray, “Oh Lord.”

On the exhale I pray, “Center me in peace.”

When I teach breath prayer, I most often teach praying Scripture. There’s also a second way and comes from the same source: the Holy Spirit. This is a request for God’s help in your circumstance… which you probably pray for all the time, but you ask the Lord to give you the wisdom and the words. Here’s how:

  1. Sit in silence, in God’s presence. You may just have a minute. Take that minute.
  2. Allow God to call you by your name; hear the love in that word: “Christine.” “Meg.” “Diana.”
  3. Now hear Him say, “Christine, dear one, What do you want of Me?” Jesus often asked that question of people; He still does.
  4. Answer Him. It could be a single word or a phrase. Keep it simple; this is heart-stuff. “Peace.” “Provision.” “Faith.” “Love.” “Forgiveness.” “Hope”—whatever it may be.
  5. Connect the phrase with your favorite word for God: “Father,” “Papa,” “Gracious Lord,” “Jesus.”
  6. Now, Write out your breath prayer. I already shared mine from this morning: “Oh Lord, center me in peace.” Is it the most literate way to write it? The best grammar? Nope. That’s not the point. This is from my heart and God’s love.
  7. Pray your breath prayer silently: His Name on the inhale; your request on the exhale.

When women encounter this prayer for the first time, they’ll pray their breath prayer–and breathe out a happy sigh of release.

It’s not just a repeated one-sided conversation. The Holy Spirit works at the deepest levels of your mind and heart and body to answer this good prayer.

You will feel calmer and more centered in Christ because you are. Your overworking brain, which was trying so hard to help you, will feel clearer; your body will feel better. Wisdom will come to you because now you can listen.
