There is Power in the Word

From time to time we are all assaulted by depression, worry, anxiety, anger, obsessive thoughts – mental states and emotions that grab onto us like a monster grabs a sinking ship. If these problems are chronic then of course we can and should seek counseling and medical help. But our first line of defense is always the Word. There is power in the Word!

I was camping with a large group this weekend. I love my friends and had a very good time but I am easily overwhelmed by crowds. I found my thoughts were going faster and faster and more and more obsessive. Thank God I had my Bible with me and I also have several memorized verses that I called on. Only the Word of God interrupted my obsessive thoughts.

When you are overwhelmed by thoughts and emotions then speak the Word. Here is a list of verses that will help:

Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…”

Titus 2:12  The grace of God teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age…”

Psalms 103:11-12 “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is God’s love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our sins from us.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Galatians 4:5-6, “Because you are his children, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’”

Rom 8:18 “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

1 John 3:1a “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

Ephesians 5:19b-20 “Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Isaiah 53:5 “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

Isaiah 58:8 “Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.”

Mark 5:34 “Jesus said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.’”
